Just 20 kilometres west of Denpasar is the most favourite attraction in Bali for tourists, called Tanah Lot. Situated in Beraban village, Tabanan Regency, Tanah Lot Temple is made up of two temples, one built on the big rock and the other on the cliff. These temples are like the Uluwatu Temple in the Badung Regency.
The name Tanah Lot in the Balinese language stands for “Land (and or in the) Sea”. This temple is renowned to be the work of Dang Hyang Nirartha in the 16th century. Throughout his travels along the south coast, he discovered this beautiful setting of the rock island, and decided to rest. As he rested, he saw fishermen who brought him gifts.
During his stay, he discussed a desire to have a shrine built on the rock to worship the holy Balinese Sea Gods. In due course, the Tanah Lot Temple was built and has now been a measure of Balinese mythology for centuries.
Tanah Lot Temple is one of seven sea temples about the Balinese coast, with each one being within sight of each other to form a chain along the south-west coast. Although shrouded in Balinese mythology, the temple was explicitly influenced by Hinduism. Poisonous sea snakes at the base of the rocky island are said to guard the temple from intruders and evil spirits.
During the 1980s, the rock face around the temple began to crumble and made the area dangerous. With this, approximately $130 million was loaned by the Japanese government to conserve the historic temple which resulted in over one third of the rock face being artificially designed to look like the original rock.
Tanah Lot is extremely commercialised with tourists paying for the privilege to enter the area. Visitors are directed to walk through an established line of Balinese souvenir shops covering both sides of the walkway to the sea. Restaurants are established on the mainland cliff-tops for the benefit of tourists.
At low tide, visitors walk to the base of the Tanah Lot Temple, and for a small donation the visitor is blessed before walking back around the side pathway leading back to the temple.
An outstanding Greg Norman designed Nirwana Golf Course is situated next to Tanah Lot and is consistently voted as one of the best in Asia, with a spectacular cliff-top background. From the luxury resort you can see the Tanah Lot Temple and the pounding surf of the Indian Ocean. The golf course is surrounded by green paddy fields and the Nirwana Golf Course itself.
Just minutes away from the golf course is the Villa les Rizieres, an 8-bedroom luxury villa, plus an extra bedroom; all accommodating up to 16 guests.
Approximately 10 minutes south of Tanah Lot is another luxury beachfront villa called Villa Semarapura. This stunning villa is comprised of a series of pavilions, ornamental ponds and swimming pool, leisurely spread throughout a spacious 5,000 square metres of rolling lawns.
