Now, how many reasons do you need to visit Tabanan, Bali?

Tabanan is the recognised capital of the regency of Bali with the same name. Sections of the Tabanan regency are in Central Bali, while other parts are around West Bali. Nonetheless, the significant areas of interest for tourists and visitors are in the Central Bali district.

Because of a lack of infrastructure, the coastal regions in the south were not well known by tourists, but as development has improved over the years, there are some luxury accommodation establishments there, waiting for bookings.

Most visitors to Tabanan associate with the beautiful green landscapes, especially the impressive Mount Batukaru, which is the second highest in Bali, reaching up to 2,276 metres.

At the town of Mengwi, there is a grand temple complex at Taman Ayun that connects to a long and rich history with its royal family.

If tourists have their own transport they can quite easily access Tabanan by the main coastal road that stretches from Denpasar to West Bali, passing directly by the town. If you do not have transport of your own, there a many ‘bemos’ available in the town for hire to take you exploring the attractions around the region. Taxis and private vehicles are also for hire, but are few and far between!

If you visit Tabanan you would be quite familiar with the name of Ngurah Rai. After all, the airport's name is Ngurah Rai Airport!

Throughout the battle for independence from the Dutch after World War II, the Balinese army was led by a brave young officer called Gusti Ngurah Rai. Unfortunately, during one of the most famous battles of the campaign, he was killed, along with 96 of his soldiers in a fight to the death ritual (Puputan). This occurred in the village of Marga.

The Margarana Memorial Park is now a site where this heroic act is commemorated. The park is open daily for visitors to view many exhibits including a graveyard for the war-dead and has a shrine dedicated to Ngurah Rai, with his photograph.

Five kilometres north of Tabanan town centre on the road to Mount Batukaru is Bali Butterfly Park. This is a small, but well maintained centre for education and research into butterflies, with some remarkable species on display. Visitors are recommended to visit early or mid-morning when the butterflies are most active.

One of Bali’s crucial guiding temples and a place to visit for Balinese Hindus is the Pura Luhur Batukaru (Batukaru Temple). It has been majestically positioned on the gradients of Mount Batukaru from the 11th century, and all visitors must carefully comply with the temple rules which are displayed clearly at the entrance. The temple sits high on the slopes of the mountain and takes on a mystical atmosphere during the drizzly, misty climatic conditions.

Another quite beautiful temple is the Pura Taman Ayun (Mengwi Water Temple) which is open daily. Built by the King of Mengwi in 1634 as his family temple, it boasts terraced courtyards in well-preserved grounds, encircled by artificial waterways.

Just to the northeast of Pura Taman Ayun is the Sangeh Monkey Forest. This forest area is home to macaque monkeys, known to act as guardians of the Bukit Sari Temple. Legend states that these monkeys are the direct descendants of the army amassed by the monkey king Hanuman and the forest is a small part of Mount Meru that fell to earth. The temple itself was constructed in the 17th century and all visitors are asked to hold on to their belongings because the monkeys are very audacious.
